“Phroneo” disappointment

Building on Set your affection..

Short quote from the above blog,

Phroneo includes a person’s affections and will as well as one’s reasoning.  In other words phroneo refers not simply to intellectual activity but also to direction and purpose of heart.

I could easily see the phroneo affection1 (Col. 3:2) as a catalyst to people who have high highs and low lows. The psychiatric term is bi-polar. I believe the biblical term is carnal minded, Rom. 8:6,7. It is an emotional and mental roller coaster, but really is spiritual. The person would be habitually letting themselves down or fulfilling themselves creating these highs and lows. We cannot fix ourselves. A whole pattern of a man is necessary in order to know what wholeness is. This pattern is the revelation of Christ in us. The new person in us.

Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick (dysfunctional), but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Jesus is the longing fulfilled in us. He is life, John 14:6. He is the passive, ever-eager, perpetual, joyful expectation in us. He is the Hope of Glory! Col. 1:27, Rom. 5:2, Eph. 1:18. This hope predicates on His faith in us because “His faith is the substance of things hoped for.” I have hope because of faith. In this, a righteousness is revealed from faith to faith. Christ is our righteousness.

A good tangent. So, hope deferred is when I could see the “the manifestations of the flesh” occur. And they don’t have to. We have grace. I believe these manifestations of the old nature are fear-based and rooted in self-imposed law of the old nature.

Gal. 5:19-21. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Depending on the focus of the  phroneo affection1, soulish-disappointment can physically manifest through fear. Fear occurred possibly because a lie was thought to be true, Rom. 7:11, Gal. 5:1. The just shall live by His faith in them. We have not been given a Spirit of fear again unto bondage and a yoke of slavery.

In this soulish-disappointment, peptides are created. See blog Peptides are miniscule pieces of protein. Dopamine and serotonin levels in the body are effected. “Dopamine is also associated with a person’s mood and cognitive qualities such as attention.2” “When serotonin levels become unbalanced, a person may experience depression.3” “A psychological reward is a process that reinforces behavior4.” So, through fear and self-imposed law which creates the fear and empowers the old man the manifestations of the flesh occur. There is a potential for strongholds or yokes. In Christ, the strongholds and yokes are demolished. He nailed the power of self-imposed law to the cross. Our old man died with Him to the power of the law. Thank you Lord.

A psychologist cannot save me, but the High Priest in the order of Melchizedek does. Jesus means “salvation.” Salvation is triune: spirit, soul & body.

Controlling the future

Print This Post Print This Post

Matt. 6:34 (NIV), “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”

If we worry about tomorrow then we could be trying to control or predict the future. In self-strength apart from His faith in us, vain imaginations (thoughts inspired by self-imposed law and fear) are created that self-imposed law attaches to. In turn, the fear of not fulfilling those expectations manifests.

The Word says, “The just shall live by faith.” Faith is not based on what we assume, think or suppose. Faith is revelatory and not time-based. Love, hope and faith do not hinge on fear, but on Him in us. Christ is the pattern of the Last Man or Adam. His pattern in us is according to grace, truth and faith.

When Lazarus died Jesus did not panic. Why? The fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him bodily. What does that mean? It means all faith is in Him. Moreover, all FULLNESS. He does not lack. He is all self-sufficient. He said, “I AM the resurrection and the life.” Before the foundations of the earth, He IS and always will BE.

He was moved with compassion and love to do the will of Him who sent Him and raised Lazarus from the dead.

Proper functioning

1 John 3:3, “3and every one who is having this hope on him, doth purify himself, even as he is pure. ”

John was a Hebrew and possibly a Levite Priest. He most likely was familiar with the definition of the Hebrew word for holy which means, “Set apart from the rest for a special function.”1

In the Greek, the word ‘pure’ from the verse above is the verb hagnizō. Hagnizō can mean “pure from contamination.” It is also comparable and akin to the Greek word hagiazo or sanctify which means “the state of proper functioning.” So, that which is purified by grace, hope and faith is set apart and grows more into the state of proper functioning, wholeness, godliness, and fullness.

The hope of verse 3 is Christ the Hope of Glory! Hope predicates on faith according to revelation and grace.

Instead of having a Need for approval I can be a new creature in Christ no longer under self-imposed law that entangles, condemns and torments me through fear. This new creature is initiated, drowned and immersed into Christ. This new creation grows in the grace and knowledge of Christ. In doing so, the individual becomes more of who they really are in Him and are made pure by grace and not dead works. This righteous nature is part of “the state of proper functioning.”

Real expectation

Jesus is the hope of glory. He brought His expectation through His faith. His expectation brings real hope that is incapable of disappointment.

Romans 5:5, “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

His faith creates expectation of hope, righteousness, life and continuous glory!!!

Galatians 5:5, “For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.”

If Jesus isn’t there then it is my expectation (from the old man) apart from Christ based on self-imposed law creating enmity and hostility towards God because I am not the Testator of the New Covenant and I cannot fulfill any law. Only Christ can in me and through me by His faith and grace.

Also, If I know something or simply if I know then I expect all the time. I expect because I know. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not yet seen.

His love shed abroad versus liquid shame

Romans 5:5, “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

Ashamed: καταισχύνω kata + ischynō

- The prefix or preposition kata- means diffusion or osmotic. So, ashamed could mean a diffused, intrinsic attribute and characteristic of the old man or nature. The Greek word, aischynō, means to “suffuse (or pour over like a liquid) with shame

Shed Abroad: ἐκχέω ekcheō

- God’s agapeo supernatural love is infinitely, continually, exponentially, surges out.

I believe what Paul is saying is that the New Man, Christ in us, is apprehending us by grace and revelation of Him in us, according to the co-mingling of the Holy Spirit in us. In the communion, fellowship, and bond of the Holy Spirit with our spirit His love, righteousness, holiness, power and nature is overwhelming insomuch that the old man is obliterated and made obsolete. We love because He first loved us. We love if we know Him. Perfect love casts out fear and continual torment. Perfect love casts out shame. Perfect constantly surges or gushes out from God because ALL FULLNESS is in Him. He has no lack.

Can’t enter His rest by fear

Playing foosball today, 07/28/09, and was playing very well. Played basketball the other day and I almost couldn’t miss. I’ve noticed players like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady and the like who get to where they are at because of who they are really. Part of who they are I believe is an inherent and consuming willingness to win. The will to win does not think about loosing. It can only think about winning. Spiritually speaking, His hope is incapable of disappointment or being let down. The promises in Christ are always yes and amen. We abide in constant expectation of His righteousness becoming our righteousness reckoning to our account.

Hebrews 4 says to enter the Holy of Holies now with boldness and not fear. We have spiritual substance in us that is called “thoughts without fear.” Over time, as we spiritually grow in the knowledge and grace of Christ, this substance becomes more of who we really are in Christ. We grow into His nature and righteousness. We begin to think, know, live and speak what we know because of Who we know in us.

I believe this is part of moving in the fullness of the blessings of the gospel. This also seems related to faith unto knowing, Rom. 15:29. How could I move, dwell or live in His fullness if I don’t know? You’ve got to know. We can know by grace through revelation. The messenger needs to be sent to impart the revelation, Rom. 10:15.

Disappointment immunization

Romans 5:5 (NLT), “And this expectation will not disappoint us.”

Hope is ever-eager passive expectation. Hope comes by faith through grace. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. The law will only bring judgment. That is one of the primary purposes of the law. The law cannot bring a genuine expectation of true righteousness.

Gal. 5:5 (NIV), “But by faith we eagerly await (abide) through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope (ever-eagerly passively expect.)” The Aramaic-to-English translation says we “abide” in the hope of righteousness. Christ is the hope of glory. In its nature, hope is incapable of disappointing. It always imparts expectation. The expectation is not unto judgment, but righteousness all the time! Real hope remains. It is an anchor to our souls from behind the veil in the heavenlies.

Invisible hope

Acts 12:11 says,

And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people.”

The word expectation in the Greek is prosdokia. The Greek root prosdokaō means “to watch toward, to look for, expect” (pros, “toward,” dokeo, “to think:” dokao “does not exist”), is translated “expecting.”1

Hebrews 11:1 says,

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Simply put, the carnal expectation comes by sight and what is seen with the eyes. This expectation is external, whimsical, and fragile. If an event changes such as Peter being released from prison then the expectation is not lasting.

People put expectation or carnal hope into a slot machine, stock market, exercise (which is good for you, but is not true hope), relationships, food, intellectualism, philosophy, success, and the list goes on.

What did Paul say in Phil. 3:7-8 ?

“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ”

Spiritual expectation is rooted and originates by grace through revelation of God’s Son. The revealed truth comes by grace which enables hearing, then hearing the quickened word. This quickened word creates faith. Hope hinges on faith. God’s hope is not of this world. It is inherently disseminating to the one possessing hope or rather being possessed by hope. This hope is supernatural. In this spiritual hope, there is always expectation of a good report, healing, resurrection, deliverance, wholeness, peace, mercy, and so on.

Christ is the hope of glory in us! Col. 1:27

He is the hope of our calling, Eph. 1:18

Not effected

1 Thess. 5:23, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Other scriptures regarding sanctification: 1 Cor. 6:11, Eph. 5:26, 1 Tim. 4:5, Heb. 10:10

I saw today that if my soul is sanctified in Christ by Him, the Holy Spirit and the unveiled word, then things that can potentially affect my soul such as being offended, disappointment, regret, and so on should not matter or have the same value anymore like they use to because of hope and love by faith through grace. Now, if these things do occur my recovery time or healing is supernaturally much quicker due to the wholeness in my soul. Even Paul’s persecutions were only a “thorn” in his flesh.

In the past, if my soul attached to an offense or disappointment the thing it attached to grew and the situation became cancerous. Heb. 6:19 says, “Hope is an anchor for the soul.” It says the soul not the spirit. Rom. 5:2, 5 talks about standing in His grace rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God and that we are not disappointed or ashamed because His love is shed abroad in our hearts.

My soul is sanctified or made whole by revelation of Christ, to Him. He is the hope of glory, Col. 1:27.

In Him, my soul is becoming truth and light. Darkness cannot overcome or comprehend light, John 1:5. This is why Jesus resurrected. Death could not comprehend or overcome the Light, John 1:7, Matt. 17:2. Jesus could never stay dead. He was the lamb slain before everything even was, Rev. 13:8.

When light is turned on in a dark room darkness flees. It has to. This light is now in our hearts! 2 Cor. 4:6.

Epiphany

In the scripture quote below, the English words revealed and revelation are different words in the Greek.

1 Peter 1:3-7, “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that 7 the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,”

Verses 3-5 talks about an actual future occurrence, “last time” in regarding to Christ’s epiphaneia.

Epihaneia means,

“Epiphany,” lit., “a shining forth,” was used of the “appearance” of a god to men, and of an enemy to an army in the field, etc.

Verse 7 talks about the revelation of Christ within us now.

The Greek word for revelation is apokalupsis which means “unveiled”.

Young’s Literal translation seems more accurate to the Greek in what Peter was saying,

“that the proof of your faith — much more precious than of gold that is perishing, and through fire being approved — may be found to praise, and honour, and glory, in the revelation of Jesus Christ,

Verse 13 says it again, “Wherefore having girded up the loins of your mind (readiness of mind or preparedness), being sober, hope perfectly upon the grace that is being brought to you in the revelation of Jesus Christ,”

Also note, the preposition “at” in 1 Peter 3:7 (KJV), is also translated “in1,902 times in scripture.

This verse sounds similar to Gal. 5:5 (NIV), “But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.” The Aramaic-to-English translation says we “abide” in the hope of righteousness. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. Faith comes by hearing and hearing the unveiled word of God. This hope hinges on faith which comes by revelation of Christ.

In Christ, by revelation, and through grace, we abide and live in a constant overwhelming, diffusing expectation of His righteousness or His nature in us. As we abide in this grace and hope of righteousness, we are transformed from faith to faith by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit and washing of the Word into His image from glory to glory. We are finite jars of clay, 2 Cor. 4:7 (NIV), containing and possessing and being apprehended by this new nature, 2 Cor. 5:17, Eph. 2:10.

This ‘expectation’ or hope of righteousness is His will in us and not ours, but eventually becomes our will in Him by Him and His grace, Phil. 2:13.
